Dear Shaune:
I left a message. Don’t know if you got it.
Patches is home!!!
During 41/2 weeks, he was locked-up in our neighbour’s
house. They went to Europe. When they returned, the searched for a strange
smell coming from a closet. When our neighbour opened the door, out bolted a scrawny,
motley cat!!!
Patches had been locked without water nor food, but survived. Praise
God.
Patches disappeared on the 26th of March and was
discovered on the 28th of April!!! He was quite dehydrated
and dishevelled, but alive!!! The vet kept him a few days. Patches is now at
home; alive and well and eating all in sight.
Thank you for your help. Thank you also to Elspeth, please. God
bless. Irma
One of many Story's Georges Story
We found George under a house in GI, abandoned by his mum and his sister dead in the same box, he was covered in fesses and flies eggs, if they had hatched he would not be with us now, we worked on his junky eye and after the third attempt it cleared up. As an avid animal supporter, I provide a service and advice for people and there animals.
“We wish to form educational programmes to further develop child and adult’s relationships with animals; we feel that good will towards an animal can help a child or an adult develop responsibility love and friendship and And in- - Return do the same to fellow humans”- S. Malloch
How we help
We feed / shelter animals in the greater Auckland area. We run a Search/ Rescue service for those that are not able, we place flyers into letterbox’s, with a professional description of the animal, this generally covers an area of five blocks and about a thousand flyers.
Door knock and place info into local shops- - letting people that a local person and their lost animal need’s there help.
We have an advantage of helping Water born and farm animals, such as: Chickens, geese, ducks, swans and even peacocks- on to a rescue farm. The location is excellent with big ponds, and natural hill surroundings and plenty of indoor cover so they can recover in a natural environment,
The web pages: still under construction, we are currently still building our lost and found sections. And when complete you will be able to place your own photo and description on the net for free with no hassle Plus more.
We have helped hundreds of animals over the years We can only carry on supporting Animals in your community by your very kind support. Thank You

Please be Responsible De-Sex your cat:
Potential of TWO cats and their offspring over SIX years is 420,000 kittens. From 5 months of age, a female cat that has not been desexed will have the potential to have 3 litters every single year, with up to 6 kittens in each litter!
Thousands of unwanted kittens are born each year because people have failed to have their cats de-sexed. Sadly there are not enough homes for all of them and many die of disease and starvation. Be a responsible owner and ensure that you do not contribute to the vast number of unwanted cats and kittens in New Zealand.
De-sexing is the most important thing you will do for your cat, ask your local vet for the best advice. Benefits Cats and kittens will be more settled, healthier and happier. They are less likely to fight (especially males) reducing the risk of abscesses, infection and feline aids. There is less chance of male cats urinating or spraying on furniture or skirting boards to mark their territory. It can prevent roaming – and therefore accidents with cars and rogue dogs. It significantly reduces the risk of cancer of the reproductive organs in cats. The cost of de-sexing is the main barrier to people not ‘doing the right thing’. Costs do vary so it pays to shop around. Start putting aside money now: if you know you will be de-sexing your kitten in a few months - put aside an amount each month. Cats/kittens and Dogs/Puppies will want to investigate new surroundings, but may be fearful of new sights and smells.
• For cats if possible, set aside a quiet room, with windows and doors closed, and allow the cat or kitten to emerge from its carry cage in its own time. Provide a carton or box lined with a soft fabric (such as a blanket), some food, water and a litter tray. Cats will also be stressed when moving house. They need to be introduced to their new surroundings with care, and kept indoors until they appear to be settled. This may take several days or even weeks.
• For Puppies also make sure doors are closed and allow to investigate the house in it’s own time.
• Keeping your cat inside until it is comfortable with its surroundings is essential. This differs from cat to cat but we at ARS recommend at least a month inside so that the cat associates you with food, love and shelter. This should also be done if you move house. It is essential that you keep your cat inside at least until after it has had its second vaccination. There are many diseases outside that it will not be protected from until this time. Introduce them to the outdoors gradually, under supervision at first, and not at night. Be mindful of hazards such as neighborhood dogs and traffic on busy roads. Ensure that when they are first allowed outside it is before, not after, a mealtime.
The litter tray – As the cat will be inside for some time, it is essential that it has a litter tray that is changed regularly e.g. Daily (cats often won’t use a dirty tray) Cats are very clean animals. Clean water
Cats and Dogs need fresh water daily
Another pet in the home:
This can be a bit difficult, if introducing another cat, place the two cats in the same room in their carriers so they can get to know the new smells. Gradually introduce them – there may be a bit of a scuffle to start with as they sort out whom is top cat. Slightly similar with dogs but make sure you supervise all interactions to start with as cats can give a nasty scratch and dogs can get very overexcited. New children in the home: – It is important that children realize that the new pet is not a toy. They must be taught how to hold and interact with the animal correctly from day one. Some animals are very tolerant of children from the beginning and others need a bit more time so supervise.
Food:
A cat or dog has nutritional needs just like any animal. Ensure that the food you purchase contains the right balance of vitamins that is required as well as being the right type (e.g. adult/kitten/puppy/mature). We can recommend the right type of food for your animal just give us a call
most cats are lactose intolerant, so milk will only cause an upset tummy. Most supermarkets and pet shops stock specially formulated cat milk. Kittens/puppies will eat small amounts frequently while adult cats/dogs not so often, so if you are at work for most of the day please ensures there is some food left out for the younger animals. All cats/kittens dogs/puppies should be fed a minimum of twice per day. They must also Have a continuous supply of fresh water at all times. Please note, animals eating dry food will require more water than those eating wet or “jelly meat” type foods.
Toys for your pet: Kittens (and cats too!) love to play so it is important that there is some environmental enrichment for them especially in those first few weeks where they are inside. Various cat toys are available and can also be cheaply made using household items like string and empty toilet rolls. It is also recommended that you purchase a scratching post as all cats need to “strop” (shed their claw casings and stretch themselves) and without a post, your brand new couch can suffer first!
Cat in the Car safely:
Apart from needing a cat carrier to take your cat home, you will also need it for safe transportation to the vet and cattery. Letting your cat run loose in the car is very dangerous and it often feels much more secure in a comfortable and secure carrier. The carrier should be made of metal and plastic to ensure there are no unplanned escapes!
We recommend micro chipping or a collar:
Situation of a lost cat, it is recommended that the cat wears a collar with an identification tag. This also indicates he/she is owned and encourages other people not to feed them. Micro chipping for identification purposes is also available at the veterinary clinic. It is important that the collar is sufficiently snug around the cat’s neck to reduce the possibility of it catching on objects. Collars that are too loose around the neck can be a hazard, as the cat may get a front leg or its lower jaw caught through the collar, with possibly severe consequences. As a guide, two fingers should be able to fit snugly between the collar and the cat’s neck. Please ensure that any collars have an elastic portion on them so that if the collar gets caught on anything the cat can break free. Micro chipping is also a very useful practice. Please see your vet for further details on this procedure. (PET REGISTER)
Registering with a vet:
It is important to register your cat with a veterinary clinic if you do not already have one. They will hold all your pet’s details on file and send you reminders regarding annual vaccinations etc. and are excellent sources of advice. Also use the national microchip service to register the number so if you animal is found then we can find the owner with in hours.
Vaccinations:
Cats and kittens receive two vaccinations in the first three months of life. If you received your cat before it is twelve weeks old than it will need a booster shot at that age. This protects them against certain types of feline disease and your vet will repeat the vaccination annually after that.
Fleas:
Advantage is a great product which is simply applied to the back of the cat’s neck once a month. It keeps fleas and their eggs away. Advantage can be purchased from your vet, if you have children around try not to let then touch the cat .
Desexing:
This is something very important to ARS as many of the cats/kittens available with us have been born due to a lack of de-sexing. If your kitten was not neutered at the time of adoption, it is your responsibility to ensure that it is de-sexed at the appropriate time (usually 4-5 months or 1kg).
Feline disease:
Apart from the annual vaccination, there are a number of other vaccinations that can be given to aid in the prevention of infections such as Feline AIDS. Your vet can discuss these options with you should you like to know more.

Colonies & Stray Cats -
A colony is a group of cats that generally gather in the same area for food and shelter. They can vary in size – up to as many as 40 cats. An acceptable method of controlling colony growth is to “Trap, Neuter & Return” However, this is only a good idea if there is someone who is prepared to take responsibility for their ongoing care – i.e. feeding, checking on whether new cats enter the colony (as they invariably do, and therefore also need to be desexed).
DOGS and DOG BREEDS
To follow are some helpful tips we have gathered from the internet, we hope this helps How do I find the dog that right for me and my living conditions? The first thing to decide before buying a dog is what type and size you want. Many factors are important when buying, but be sure to consider what breed is suitable for you and your family. Remember also, that different breeds may have genetic health issues to watch out for... Bigger Dogs
Can be susceptible to hip-dysphasia. This is a degenerative disease that affects the hip joint. When a dog with hip-dysphasia matures, the hip joint and socket loose their ability to bear the animal’s bodyweight. They will have a hard time running, walking or even standing. The only cure for this condition is surgery. So ask for a hip-score of the breed to make help prevent problems that may develop. Smaller breeds of dogs can have genetic concerns of their own. Dogs that are in the “Toy” breed category, like the Pekinese the pug, are susceptible to breathing problems. These dogs have a short muzzle (or nose), which does not leave much room for sinus and nasal development. This is a condition that is often times not evident in early development. You may have seen the News and documentary recently on the problems of breeding the perfect dog for shows, (quote)“Pedigree Dogs Exposed.” The British public was shocked by program’s revelations that inbreeding among purebred dogs is causing crippling and sometimes fatal genetic diseases not revealed by breeders who sell their puppies for thousands of pounds. And this is all over the world even here. So, what should you look for when buying a dog? INFORMATION is the key word! After you decide what type of dog you want, seek out people who already own this type of dog. Maybe somebody you know already owns one? Get the word out that you are looking to buy a dog. Talk to people and gather as much information about the breed as you can go to a pet website. And if you see a dog you like then talk to the Pet owner they love to talk about their pets. Buy books and read about the bread you are interested in. becomes an educated consumer BEFORE you buy your dog from a breeder. Finally, when you talk with dog breeders, ask any questions that come to mind. Honest dog breeders will be more than happy to talk with you and answer every question. Note the condition of dog’s environment. Is the dog pen clean? Are the puppies well cared for? Can you see the mother and father? What type of puppy food are they being feed? Have the puppies had their shots? Reputable breeders love their animals and go to great lengths to provide a proper “home like” environment. Puppies are products of their surroundings. A good, clean environment will surely be reflected in a dog’s playfulness. Beware of breeders who are interested only in making money. They generally don’t pay much attention to their dog’s emotional needs and health concerns. Also, they may in-breed their dogs and this can trigger severe health issues. AVOID THESE BREEDERS! Some breeders may offer a guarantee. This allows time to take your puppy to a vet for inspection. If any health issues are identified, contact the breeder and get your questions answered. Good, honest breeders care for their dogs and it shows in their surroundings. There are no guarantees that you will always have a normal, perfect puppy, but you greatly increase the odds when you do your homework first! Weird Dog Behavior - Is this Normal? A dog may at times behave in a way which dies not seem normal to humans. The pet owner may become perplexed and a little worried unable to explain weird behavior. The behavior may seem odd to the human, but for a dog, it may be all in a days work! Here are a few random ‘weird’ behavior patterns that may be perfectly normal and may have a perfectly valid reason governing their behavior. At times, some modification in dog behavior may be possible and desirable, however many a times, nothing effective can be done. A pet dog may love to roll in the smelly dirt and grass, especially after a bath. This may be very irritating to a dog owner, who may see all his effort at keeping a dog clean go waste. However the dog may be doing this specific act to mask his scent. This is one dog trait that the pet owner may find almost impossible top change or control. A pet dog digging holes in a perfectly manicured garden can be very annoying to the owner. However, a dog owner has to remember that digging is a basic instinct with most dogs. They may be burying something or trying to reach the cooler soil underneath. If, repeated observation shows that the dog is digging for no apparent reason, it may be prudent to designate a specific area for the dog to dig. This will prevent the whole garden from being spoiled and limit the damage to a particular designated area. A dog chasing its tail can be amusing for a while. It is perfectly normal doggy behavior. However if it becomes excessive, then you need to find the underlying reason. One possible reason could be that the dog gets lot of positive attention while chasing its tail. Encouragement in the form of loud clapping and excitement shown by those around the dog may encourage the dog to keep chasing its tail, seeking continued attention. It is time for the humans around the dog to change their behavior, before the dog will change. A dog jumping on visitors and the owner as he enters the house is normal affectionate behavior. It may have been lonely for a while and may be pleased to find company. A small puppy keeps jumping on everyone, seeking attention and is considered cute. This same behavior when translated into the grown dog is irritating to some owners. However this is a normal extension of the same puppy behavior. Dogs may like to ride in the car with their heads sticking out of the car window. The dog does this for the fresh air and to soak in new smells and sights. This may be normal dog behavior, but it may be prudent to keep the windows partially closed to discourage this kind of behavior so that the dog may not get harmed by passing vehicles or road debris. A dog may chew up shoes on account of a couple of reasons. It may be teething or just seeking attention. if it is teething, it makes sense to provide it with store bought chew toys. If, it is seeking attention, keep your shoes safe and give the dog lots of love and attention and time and it will start to reciprocate. A dog may chew socks and other pieces of clothing to vent its frustration or anxiety. When it starts to do this on a regular basis, the pet owner needs to give it more attention, more exercise and some company. Many big and small dogs are scared of thunder. This is normal as the loud sound coming from seemingly nowhere, can scare a pet. I hope you found the above explanations for weird dog behavior useful. Many a times, it is just the dig seeking attention and minor behavioral modification techniques can help amend weird patterns. However at times weird behavior is a perfectly normal doggy trait. A breed i have
The Origin of the Vizsla has been obscured by the centuries, but it is assumed that its ancestors were the hunters and companions of the Magyar hordes which swarmed over Central Europe more than a thousand years ago and settled in what is now Hungary.
The breed became a favorite of the early barons and warlords who preserved its purity through the years. The reason for the breeds continued existence is due to its innate hunting ability. The ability was developed by the terrain in which it grew-the plains of Hungary.
The great wars interfered with the normal breed progress of the Vizsla. The close of World War I found the Vizsla all but extinct. The breed was preserved by those who loved the breed and refused to let it die out. The years between the two wars were difficult ones but those who truly loved the breed stayed strong. After World War II, when Russians took control of Hungary, the native Hungarians feared all the Vizsla would be killed by the Russians, because owning a Vizsla was a symbol of aristocracy. Hungarians who fled before the Russian occupation in 1945 took their dogs with them into Austria, Italy and Germany. They were also used to send down the mines to blow up germans, owening a vizsla or any animal, how you could fathom the thought of even considering sending your animal down a mine to blow up.
The name “Vizsla” in Hungarian means, “Pointer.” The Vizsla is a fine retriever with an excellent nose, and is a good small game and bird hunter and pointer - even on marshy terrain. They have also been successful obedience competitors. The breed’s gentle, friendly disposition makes them well-suited to their role as a family companion dog. The Vizsla has two cousins, one with hard-wire hair called the Wirehaired Vizsla and the other a rare longhaired Vizsla. The longharied can be born in both smooth and wire litters, although this is quite a rare occurrence. The longhaired Vizslas are not registered anywhere in the world.
The Vizsla started getting imported into the United States in the 1950s, and they were admitted into the American Kennel Club registry in 1960. They are excellent hunters with plenty of endurance, as well as gentle and friendly companions.
This is an energetic dog with enormous stamina. It needs plenty of opportunity to run, preferably off the leash in a safe area, and a lot of regular exercise. If these dogs are allowed to get bored, they can become destructive and also vocal. Training and exercise are extremely important with this breed. Start leash training as a young puppy and enrolling in obedience training is recommended. Without proper training, your Vizsla may be nearly uncontrollable on walks. We recommend Puppy training at 021 02649651
Housebreaking is typically fairly quick with the Vizsla, however it does take persistance and patience. An owner who is home to monitor the young puppy and offer frequent potty breaks will have their puppy housebroken quicker than one who is working all day.
Crating your Vizsla puppy when you are not there to keep an eye on him is recommended. Puppies tend to be very curious and everything ends up in their little mouths. Be sure to puppy-proof your home before bringing home your new puppy, and keep a close eye on him to see what you may have missed during puppy proofing.
Never allow your puppy to chew on old shoes or socks, as it may be difficult for them to understand which ones are allowable and which ones are not. Also these items are a threat to your puppies’ health since they can tear off pieces and get a bowel obstruction. Always choose proper puppy toys and watch the toys closely for wear and tear- and throw away any damaged toys.
They are very loving, demonstrative and gentle; the Vizsla is somewhat willful and distractible, but smart and trainable. This breed needs a patient, firm hand. They are reliable with children, able to adapt quickly to family life, and are generally good with other dogs. Energetic and athletic, the Vizsla must receive sufficient exercise or they may become destructive or neurotic. Socialize this dog well and get him accustomed to noises at an early age. Look for breed lines that are not high-strung or shy. Vizslas are known as chewers yes as puppys. They have many talents such as: tracking, retrieving, pointing, watchdog and competitive obedience. And Frisbee catching
The Vizsla’s coat is short and smooth and can be solid golden rust in different shadings. Caring for the coat is quite simple, bathing and brushing as needed. Also be sure to trim nails on a regular basis as well as cleaning out the ears. Some Vizsla’s tend to have skin reactions due to allergies. It’s best to feed a high quality food without a lot of fillers such as corn. Corn is the main allergy in dog foods, and tends to be one of the main ingredients in dog foods that can be purchased in grocery stores.
Males should be 22 to 24 inches tall, females 21 to 23 inches. They are lively, good mannered, and have well developed protective instincts. When purchasing a Vizsla puppy, check to be sure that both parents have OFA certificates clearing them of any hip problems since Vizsla’s are prone to hip problems. You should also find a breeder who checks their breeding dog’s eyes yearly and a skin biopsy for Sebaceous Adenitis. Also ask about low thyroid, seizures, and cancer in the bloodlines.
